That is the standard HTC People widget. To get the widget on the phone just hit the plus button on bottom right and choose it under the HTC widgets. This then lists all of your favourites.

To make anybody in your contact list a favourite hit the plus button on the HTC People widget and choose them from your contacts.

To attach a photo to anybody on your contact list first save the photo on your SD card. Then long press on the contact and choose edit. When the edit screen comes up press menu then add photo then choose the photo you have saved.

I think you probably already know because you have solved it but when I said long press the contact I meant in the list in the contacts app, not the people widget. If you long press any widget or short cut on your home screen all that will ever do is give you the option to delete them from the screen.

Oh and by the way you can add as many as you like, but the widget only shows three. If you want to see the rest just scroll the the contacts in the widget up or down with your finger
