Hello, I have been given a nexus to try fix, Its one of the older style ones 7 inch i think with only front facing camera and wifi only, It seems to have an intermittent problem powering on, I've checked and rechecked all hardware so think now maybe its some software problem as the owner has tried to root the device unsuccessfully and i think flashed wrong ROM,

Is there anyway i can restore the device and possibly even root it for them at the same time without being able to boot into the device and see build version etc, I am able to get it to power on eventually but takes some playing about removing battery a few times till it decides to boot but once its on it stays on but cant access anything as it just keeps constantly throwin up the same error sayin "Unfortunately the process com.android.phone has stopped" and i can close them all fast enough to view anything in the tablet,

Any help here would be great, Im guessing i just need to flash the correct ROM plus whatever other files are needed the ODIN/USB way, Im just not sure what files to use for this device, Think its Grouper

Take a look at the Nexus Root Tool kit
    http://www.wugfresh.com/nrt/
User friendly, just follow the prompts to return to stock, root and install TWRP recovery.

Welcome to our AndroidForums, @campbell27101987 :).

I've moved your thread over here to the Nexus 7 (1st/gen 2012) root area for you.

Odin isn't involved in these Asus Nexus devices, just good ole fastboot that the NRT uses (that our esteemed @Jfalls63 kindly linked for you).

    Cheers and best of luck!

Thank you very much to yous both, I will try this now and see how it goes,
Nice the way the admin here have the decency to take a small bit of time to move thread to the correct area unlike other forums ive been to who just delete and say nothing if this happens, ;-)

That is the stock recovery...if you want a custom recovery (TWRP I'm guessing), you'd have to flash it.

Not sure if NRT will flash just the recovery...

There's a couple of ways to install it depending on whether you're rooted or not:

    - if NOT rooted, you can use fastboot to flash it from fastboot/bootloader mode

    - if you ARE rooted, you can use several apps (including one of mine :)) to do that

Why do you want to go into recovery mode?

so i can root, Ive restored firmware to stock 5.1.1 using NRT and next was going to unlock then root but to unlock i need to be in recovery mode?? Id be happy with just OTA update to 6.0.1 but says ive got latest update already installed so guess i just want to root then flash a decent stable custom rom with latest android version

Okay, that's cool :) --the NRT can do the rooting thing for you...notice this section on the NRT window:

Ok so i noticed that section after flashing to stock + unrooting, Now to do anything else i need to get into recovery mode but cant as theres a red warning triangle so its not gone into recovery mode correctly i think,

Is there a way to reflash even the stock recovery mode so i can then unlock root then flash newer rom,

    Okay, here's the deal:

    - you've got an unlocked bootloader, which means you can manually flash a custom recovery from fastboot without being rooted

    - you can also use the NRT to flash a custom recovery and root your device

    - you cannot flash a custom ROM without having a custom recovery installed

    - you aren't yet rooted so not sure what you mean by unlock root?

    - you already got the stock recovery flashed

I think you're in a spot where you've got lots of options and ways to do things now and you have the knowledge to figure-out exactly how best to arrive at where you want.

So, your first step should be rooting so that you can easily flash a custom recovery--or, you'll have to know how to manually use fastboot to flash the custom recovery from fastboot/bootloader mode.

Let me know what you knowledge about using fastboot is....

Thanks man, Sorry im no expert at all this, I have some android knowledge but not much, I mean i thought i needed to unlock bootloader then root then flash custom ROM, My problem is i am using NRT now to try unlock bootloader as it shows white lock on boot (I think this means bootloader is locked does it not?) and to proceed any further it says device needs to be in recovery mode for it to be detected but when i hold volume down + power then select recovery mode i just see the red warning triangle so not in recovery mode and PC not detecting it,

Let's get the fastboot utility on your PC first and then we'll see where you actually are:

    - following the instructions in this post to download the sdk-tools.zip file:

    - next, put the N7 into fastboot/bootloader mode

    - then, from a Windows Command Prompt, change to the directory where your sdk-tools files were extacted to

    - then, issue the following command and let us know what it says:

    fastboot getvar all

    Ah, perfect!

    That confirms two things:

    1. Your bootloader is indeed unlocked :) (re. the "unlocked: yes" line)

    2. You've got the fastboot utility and it can access your device (and proper USB drivers installed; which we knew it should be able to because you've already used NRT)

So now, if you want to flash a custom recovery, you'll just have to do this:

    - download the most current TWRP for your device:

    - place/move/copy that twrp-3.0.2-0-grouper.img in the same folder as your fastboot.exe utility

    - put your device in fastboot/bootloader mode

    - type this to flash the custom recovery:

    fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.0.2-0-grouper.img

    - you can also launch the custom recovery like this from fastboot:

    fastboot boot twrp-3.0.2-0-grouper.img

Can't advise you on any custom ROMs for the N7--I'm still running stock rooted :).

    Cheers and best of luck!

Is 5.1.1 really the latest OFW for this device? Is 6.0.1 not on OFW yet or am i missing something?

Trying to download some apps on playstore and getting an error saying device not supported so i thought this was due to outdated firmware, Is it?
