OK, followed the rooting guide on my HTC Desire (I'm with 3 UK) since we never seem to be getting 2.2 and I've run out of room.

Now, I'm getting all sorts of problems.

Phone keeps rebooting, screen keeps turning on/off, can't make calls, can't connect to Wi-fi, all sorts of major problems. Phone keeps telling me that a 'process system is not responding' too. It doesn't even seem able to read the SD card anymore!

I have not got a gold card.

I don't mind what I have to do at this point, I don't even care if I go back to 2.1, but I have no idea what to do to fix these problems!

Is there anything I can do to just wipe the phone back to how it was? I'm a real noob at this and feel out of my depth, any help would be fantastic.

  2. What method did you use to root?

Did you do anything after you rooted?

  4. So you can get into recovery?

Did you take a Nandroid backup before you went to 2.2?

The Nandroid backup failed with an error I can't remember - at that point I pressed on, fearing consequences if I broke the 'sequence'.

    Wishing now I hadn't.

Not sure if I could flash with another ROM might help, but don't really know where to start with another ROM.

  6. Ideally you want to get the original RUU from 3 and run the executable to set it back to default settings...

You could always try to restore the nandroid anyway, but to be honest I would hang on for advice from people with a bit more experience than me...

Is it SLCD screen? Did you download clockworkmod recovery?

    If so, boot into recovery.

Once in recovery, do all the wipes. Also go to one of the install options in recovery to see if that can browse your SD card.

If you can, you can also mount your SD card in the partitions and mounts menu (or mounts if its an older version of clockwork mod). This will let you put a rom on your sd card and flash it after you unmount.

This rom should be a safe bet:

  8. Just the person I was waiting for to jump in danfrance :)

For the record, all the wipes (to me at least) means

    Wipe Data/Factory Reset
    Wipe Cache
    Advanced/Wipe Dalvik Cache

I am sure danfrance will correct me if I am wrong :)

Thank you both for your help - I've resolved the issue (phew!)

    Using this guide;

How To: Unroot the HTC Desire | TheUnlockr

Just had to download a different RUU (which may have been corrupted the first time - it didn't even load when I first downloaded it, got another to load but that was unsuccessful in updating).

For the record, I was unable to get into recovery during boot!

Basically scared off rooting / ROMs for now, phone is back at 2.1, just need to reinstall settings and apps with titanium and MyBackup.

Shame though, really wanted 2.2 features like install to SD.

Hopefully 3 will get their finger out and make it available soon, I'm out of space!

Thanks again for the quick help / advice.
