Hi peoples, I have a s4 i9505, I wanted to recover a lost sms, so I got a recovery program half way through the recovery it all crashed. Now the phone is in a boot loop at the Samsung logo. A friend said I need to install a new rom using my pc. He tried to do one, but it kept failing half way through the install. Now I'm stuck can someone please help me with a step by step process to fix my phone.

Is it a carrier branded device? Or what country did you buy it from?

Cwm support has neen discontinued. Use Twrp, as far as a rom... That's a personal choice. If it's a stock rooted rom then thats easy as well.

Have a look here for your selection:
You will have to Google to find the one you like but they are based on Android 5.0.1 Lollipop.

Hi paulus29, I have just Rooted my spare (Standard) S4 i9505 and installed the Xenon version (Nougat) 7.1.2 and all seems to be working 100%. Hope this gives you hope to do your install as I find the S4 is a great phone. The cameras work great and the photos are superb so why buy a new phone?

Thanks Andy, I eventually got the latest omega rom installed, bad move, it drains the battery in about 50 minutes, and that's just looking at emails and eBay, no video watching, grrrrr. I've downloaded the 2 files from Xenon, this looks like a good rom. Now how would I go installing it? The recovery I've got installed is a cm, xenon needs a twrp, xda have got a twrp app, not sure what to do, I don't want to conflict the phone since I've got it going, but I definitely ha e to get rid of this omega rom. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks Paul

    markhascole,
Paul, I now have 2 'Rooted' and Rommed S4's. My 1st. is the CM13 (Marshmallow 6.0.1) working 100% but CM have given up making Roms and there are no more "Nightlys" since last Dec.
The 2nd. S4 as I Posted earlier is on Xenon (Nougat 7.1.2) and I have installed the App Data Smart Switch to transfer all my Marshmallow info to my Nougat.
I used this and find TWRP works great: http://zidroid.com/twrp-recovery-for-galaxy-s4-i9505-on-android-lollipop/
for backup and download and install.
Do you want to stay with Lollipop or try newer Androids? Cheers Neil.

Paul, I see CM13 Marshmallow 6.0.1 is still around. I've had that on my main S4 for 12 months and it's been 100% stable. As I said earlier, "nightly updates" were available until mid December when the guy who developed it passed it on to another crowd.
I have only just tried the Nougat 7.1.2 Android from Xenon on my spare S4 (was running Lollipop 5.0.1) and that was rated the best and seems to be stable at this point in time. I like the Recorder that is built in and the ability to record phone calls (incoming/outgoing).
I would suggest that if you want to try the latest (Xenon Nougat) that you do a Factory Reset which should wipe the phone clear of your previous attempt.
    FYI.
If for some reason, your phone doesn’t boot up or you want to erase EVERYTHING on your internal storage and the phone for returning for warranty, you can do a factory reset using stock recovery.

Power off your phone (or pull battery for 15-20 seconds) Reinstall battery and hold down Volume Up and Power buttons together.

Phone will vibrate and show Samsung logo.

Keep holding down Volume Up and button but let go of Power button.

It will take a few seconds for the Recovery Mode to appear. Release the Volume button.

Once in stock recovery, choose “wipe data/factory reset”. Use the Volume Up/Down button to select required status.

Choose “delete all user data”. WARNING! This will ERASE EVERYTHING ON YOUR INTERNAL STORAGE!

    Once done, reboot system.

Once rebooted, you should find your Galaxy S4 completely back to Day 1 when you got the phone, congrats!

For international GT-i9500 or GT-i9505, go to SamFirmware.com You will have to subscribe and sign in for an account (Free) and download the appropriate stock firmware for your model/country Galaxy S4.

Unzip the stock firmware, you should find a file ending in “tar.md5”. That is the stock firmware you will flash using ODIN.

I've included this for your assistance. If you do the Factory Reset, you will be able install TWRP using Odin.
Kies (Samsung) won't work on a 'rooted' phone.
If you need further help - let's know. Good Luck.:D

Thanks for your help, a couple more questions ; the omega rom I've installed was a stand a lone install, my phone had crashed and wouldn't boot. I was able to load a recovery through Odin then load rom, so I'm not sure doing a factory reset will help, am I wrong, I don't know. So I'm thinking if I load a twrp recovery through Odin, what happens with the cwm recovery already loaded.? Will there be a conflict with 2 different recoveries installed. I thing I need some more guidance please, that'd be awesome, thanks.

Hi Paul, a Factory Reset should clear your current setup. TWRP has the Backup and Recovery setups as well. If you have Downloaded the Custom ROM you want - just follow the procedure in the earlier link I Posted. I don't think CWM will work if TWRP is installed. There is no conflict if you use TWRP to Backup your system before you Flash the ROM. If anything goes wrong - you can Restore through TWRP.
    I have found that:
Battery should be as near fully charged before you start.
Your USB cable to comp is in 100% good connection.
Once you have the phone in Download state and connected to the computer - place it on a stable surface and DON"T disturb it while Flashing is in progress.
If the Flash Fails - just disconnect everything (remove battery and refit again) and start from scratch again. I had to do this 3 or 4 times on 1 phone I flashed.

When I downloaded the xenon rom there were 2 files one about 320mb which is the rom, the other one is a small  md5sum file. I tried to install the Rom but it keeps failing, I think it might need the md5 file, however I can find no way to load it in the phone, help again please
