I have tried to install htc sync from the downloads page (htc) and i have an AppleMac (snow Leopard) and it will not install from the exe file, can anyone please advise ........

Yes EXE's are windows based applications.
I think if you attach the Desire to your mac you will see a finding new device popup and your filemanager program should show a new mounted drive, leaving you to copy files to /from the Desire
