Help with freezing processes

Hi All,

Well im new to the Android world and it certainly is a minefield of info. I too would like to increase my battery life but being a real noob am a bit worried about doing something wrong. I've read that you loose contacts, photos etc, move all to sd card and so on. Being new this just puts me off doing the flashing, rooting or whatever i need to do. Unfortunately there is no where that explains it for a zoomer like me.

Is there a way i can freeze certain processes like social hub etc with rooting or if not is there a idiots guide somewhere please. . .

you need to root and then download titanium backup.

rooting sounds complicated at first, especially with lots of new terms, but if you follow the chainfire links on the "all things root" sticky, it's quite straightforward. I think most of us think "oh, that was easy" after our first time!!!!

i agree, CF root is the best way to go out about it. u could also really improve battery life by flashing a firmware upgrade, look here

flash XXKG5 (latest official) or XXKH3 (latest but unofficial) running 2.3.4 gingerbread.. very good battery life on these two firmwares. after u do that, flash the corresponding CF root kernel from the link that Sydney99 posted.

and if u carefully follow the guides that both links have, u should not lose any data or change any way ur phone works!

agree - personally get a massively better battery life on KG5 (compared to ealier versions, not tried KH3 yet)

A big thanks for the replies but going to the pages you have suggested still has a list of files and insructions a mile long. You have to remember i have no clue about these things.

According to "About phone" i have

Kernal version : 2.6.35.7-I1900BVKG3-CL344296root@DELL103#2

Build Number : GINGERBREAD BVKG3

I have downloaded to my PC desktop:Odin3-V1.85 Zip and XWKDD_insecure.tar

Which order to i need to do things and what files do i need to use. . . . sorry for being a pain..

1st flash the update

1. go here: [ROM + Guide]Official i9100 Firmwares KF1/2/3/4/, KG1/2/3/5/6/7, KH1/3 Download - xda-developers
2. go down to either KG5 file (OXA Poland not the stock kernal) or further down to KH3
3. save the link and then right click and extract the file
4. open odin and click PDA and then add the extracted .tar file
5. flash according to the steps on the above webpage ("flashing with odin")

Your phone will update to new firmware

Then root

go here [17.08.2011][CF-Root v4.1] KE2/7/8, KF1/2/3/4, KG1/2/3/5/6/7, KH1/3 - su+bb+CWM4 - xda-developers to get the "insecure kernal" that will root the phone.
look for post 5, the files start CF-root-SGS2 - there's one for KG5 and one for KH3 - pick the file you updated to

If you then flash this extracted file in the same way you did above, you phone will then be rooted with all the root apps eg. CWM and superuser added.

The next (optional) step is getting rid of the yellow triangle on booting. instructions are on this page - this is what the "stock kernal" files on the first webpage are used for.

I appreciate you offering advice, but can we restrict discussion to the topic in-hand please? Updating the device firmware has no connection to freezing unwanted processes.

I understand your concern Slug, but this guy ask about freezing processes which requires rooting. If you look at 1st post then you can see that he also needs help in flashing and rooting. It is just that the title is wrong..

Btw driver2665, if you want a beginners guide to updating firmware and rooting I would suggest you to go to this site:

It really teaches you how to do them step-by-step. Like all the advices above, upgrade your firmware to latest one and then root it!

Trust me, it is not difficult. I was in your position before .

sorry, thought you might move it, but it was a bit of a grey area - the question was really a non-root question that lots of other users may have, but (unles I'm wrong!) there isn't a non-root solution to this problem.

Rooting the GS2 does not require a firmware flash though. Unlike most other handsets the procedure is much less involved.

Put yourself in the shoes of somebody with no experience who searches the site for advice on how to freeze unwanted apps. Would you really want to flash a new firmware (and possibly a modem too) unnecessarily?

Well took the plunge today and updated with Odin to KG5. Quite painless really. That was all thanks to the help and advice from you guys and gals.

Altough i did loose internet connectivity after. managed to sort it by re registering the phone and ticking "Use packet data" through the " Mobile network setings". . . hope this was right.

Just gotta see if i loose anyhting if i Root Now!!
