Root Help with ROMs

Someone please explain what a ROM is. I'm obviously brand new to all of this, so just a brief explanation. I tried googling around and didn't come up with much. Thanks fellas.

Also a recommendation on which ROM to use, would be great as well.

ROM is the Car, Kernel is the Engine, and Theme is the paint job.

essentially Android OS is like a car manufacturer, and they have x cars available. The Fascinate, the Driod X etc

Well you see that Car Manufacturer and you really like that fascinate car, but it has more stuff than you want, and doesnt have some stuff that you do want. So you get a different model of that same car (ROM). You now pick your engine, super powered, economy, fast, etc (Kernel), then you decide how you want it to look when your in it (Theme) so you pick the paint job.

As far as the best to use. Its up to the individual. You will just have to try them out until u find one you like.

Do all Kernels work with all ROMS?

Do all Kernels work with all ROMS?

Yes and no....there are Kernels for certain builds.

There are Di01 ROMs which need Di01 Kernels

There are Dj05 and Dl09 Kernels which some are interchangable with either ROM and some are not.


Also you need to make sure you have a matched radio. cannot use a Di01 radio with a Dj05 ROM and have the phone work properly.

Ok i found this. But which ROM would you recommended?

I've only had experience with the Superclean rom at the moment so I can't really speak for anything else. But I can tell you that this one hasn't let me down yet.
