Guys I really need help here. I used a 2.1 rom on my GSM HTC Hero a few days back. I got it upgraded to 2.1 update-1. Then I found out that it sucked and tried to revert it with no success. I've gotten a stock 1.5 nandroid but have absolutely no idea how to use it. I've tried downgrading by various methods by I keep getting stuck at error [170] or error [171]. I'm getting ready to throw my phone out the window. Pls help.

To restore a Nandroid backup you need to have a custom recovery flashed to the handset, which in turn requires root access. See this post for (probably) the easiest way to do so for 2.1, and there's a link to the latest Amon_RA recovery image here.
