Hero, No data plan

Hey,

Is it possible to run android without a data plan? I'm on Orange UK and really like the HTC Hero but I hear Android has something called AlwaysOn internet.

Is it possible to run it without an internet connection and just use WiFi when available (home, college etc)

With data plans so cheap in the UK you should consider getting a cheap one with limited usage for emergencys and email. in the US you'll pay an arm and a leg for data plans though....

Sadly I cant afford a data plan at all (I'm a full time student) so that just isn't an option for me (trust me I'd love to be able to access the net anywhere).

Yes you can run without a data connection. There is an option in the menu that allows you to turn this off. HTC also provides a 1 touch widget to turn this on or off so its very easy to do as well.

Well I guess you can run it without a dta plan just make sure data services are off.

Don't bother getting a Hero if you aren't getting a data plan. It's like getting a PS3 and then buying no games.

Orange UK do a 500mb data bundle for a fiver a month, thats not so bad.?

You can also get a WiFi widget to toggle WiFi on or off.
Also look on the market for a WiFi finder app.
Very useful if your out and about.

You lucky Englishmen with your plethora of data plans to choose from, brb destroying verizons network for giving me unlimited (totally kiding). But seriously for 5 pounds extra it would be worth it, just see if your parents can chip in that extra 5 a month, I pay 30 for my data plan and my parents pay the other 10 for the extra line and I'm not even out of highschool yet.

Yep, might be easier if you ring them up and add it tho as they can tell you when it will be activated.

Ring them dont do it online. you get to ask them lots of questions and do the ... well ive been with you for xxx years and i dont have anything to show for it. what discount can you apply.
