Does rooting something like jailbreaking for apple?

Because I do not want to do anything to my phone if it will cancel the warranty.

Yes, I believe rooting is just like jailbreaking (and the consensus is that rooting does void your warranty--folks typically un-root (put things back to original) before returning their phone for a warranty claim).

Talk to the folks in your phone's all-things-root sub-forum for any specific details about rooting (each phone has a different or device-specific root methods). This may allay some of your fears about the warranty issue.
