I am new to smart phones (yeah, I waited too long) and I now have an HTC Evo 4G on the way. Looking forward to the learning experience, especially how to root my phone so I can upgrade to ICS.

    Thanks, folk.
olbriar, I am over there now, reading "ROOTING for Dummies".
I have a few days before the phone arrives, and, if I understand things correctly, it would be best if I rooted prior to doing anything else.
I have a 32 GB microSDHC card for it sitting in the drawer, so I hope the rooting experience will be short and sweet.

Rooting is a choice not a must. Most do prefer rooting their Android devices... There is no prize for the quickest root. :) Take your time and know your path well before proceeding.
Have fun with your phone no matter which path you choose. Thanks again for using these forums and have fun as a member.

    Welcome :)

Yeah just make sure you know the risks that you're taking when rooting your device. Also make sure to follow the steps closely, one mistake can mess up the whole process and you'll have to start over :(.

Whatever decision you make I am certain you will enjoy your device!

Good points, DC. I don't even know what bootloader the device has, of course.
I am studying intensely, but anything can go wrong, to be sure.
