    hi

I am a newbie here having recently acquired a new Desire S.
As a software engineer I have been using unix since the 1980s and mobile phones as long.

So far as I can see the big difference with Android is that it doesn't work.

maybe that will change, my new year wish

Welcome. With your expertise, you should consider rooting your phone. Rooting will allow you to tweak the phone to make using it a more enjoyable experience. There are plenty of ROMs and apps available to improve your phone. If you don't find what you like, you might decide to develop some yourself. Another developer is always welcome.

Rooting information for the Desire S is located here: Desire S - All Things Root - Android Forums

Hope you have a Happy New Year all year long.
