    UNROOTED
    Device Build Number: 3.70.651.1 CL294884 release-keys
    Android Version: 2.2
    HBoot Version: 2.10.0001
unrevoked Version Used: unrevoked 3, 3.32

    QUESTION:

so im following the guide stickied on your excellent forum here on which i generally choose to lurk :) hi
and encountered the Error: failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?
so i followed the note under step 6 instructing me to change the connection type from charge only to disk drive but the error repeated itself, and before i attempted to root i formatted the phone and my SD card so there is no "App List Backup" installed, and i am finding no other guidance :( oh the humanity!!

is my firmware, indeed, to new!?

looking at the phone and perusing the thread:

    http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/249730-unrevoked3-your-firmware-too-new.html

i do get the S-OFF when in the boot menu, but i never ran the reflash_package without getting the error message... is some aspect of the rooting program missing? or am i fully rooted and it is time to continue the procedure?

update: when i type su into the app terminal emulator i get access denied and the $ remains

    edit: this was a triumph!!

yeah some people have to run it a few times. If you got s off it sound like it made it half way and you just need to flash pc36img from hboot to get your recovery and get you going.post back if you haven't got it yet.

There is a section in the Rooting for Dummies guide that explains what to do if unrevoked gets as far as giving you S-OFF, but fails before you have a custom recovery and a rooted ROM.
