I am looking to create a very high resolution background for my Triumph in Photoshop. I know this may sound like a complete noob question, but what dimensions should I use to make it have the quality that could compare to the stock backgrounds that comes with the phone? --Thanks

I did figure this much out, however because the background is applied to all the homescreens, it does not allow me to use the entire background image I created.

then compensate for all the screens and make it "480 x number of screens by 800" :D

The standard background image for multiple (the standard 5) screens is 960 x 800.

    Edit: Found the correct resolution.

ok look. google made it so android will take a 4:3 ASPECT RATIO image and apply it so it can be scrolled across all homescreens. This was probably not thought out completely, but thats what it is

ONLY 4:3 aspect images will work correctly. so for a HVGA screen, which is 320x480, you need a 640x480 wallpaper.

for our 480x800 screen, you need a 1060x800 image to be a native pixel for pixel fit. no up or downscaling needed.

although, any image in a 4:3 aspect ratio will work perfectly, it will just downscale to fit the screen.

thats why when u make a 480x800 image, it cuts off the top and bottom when you try to apply it as a wallpaper. the phone is trying to get a 4:3 aspect ratio section of that image but can only go so far since the image is taller than it is wide.

On a related note, I found that wallpapers with high contrast and small distracting bits make it confusing to use the phone and discern icons from the background. the more colorful the wallpaper the more this occurs. you might not notice it consciously but you'll have eye strain.

the best wallpapers stick to a solid color with a minimal pattern that repeats across the entire image subtly. nature wallpapers can get away with contrasting colors becuase looking at mountains and lakes and stuff is something we process on a daily basis and its easier to discern a icon hovering in the sky over a mountain.

Personally I like bokeh wallpapers, most I make myself. or the view through a car windshield on a rainy day. similar to bokeh, but with water drops. like the iPhone wallpapers. There easier on the eyes.

maybe I ranted a bit. oh well. hope this helps

Thank you shmackshmack, that was a very detailed response. I used the dimensions, and for some stupid reason it still clips the edges of the background slightly, but it's much better than it was, and won't effect the quality of the background. Here's the background I created to test the dimensions with, feel free to use it if you like.

  8. 1060x800 isnt an exact 4:3 aspect ratio image, I used a aspect ratio calculator to get close.

there doesnt seem to be a standard resolution thats 800 pixels tall. only 1024x768 is close, but it would be upscaled on our screens and look slightly blurry

I would take one of the stock default wallpapers, open it in photoshop and save its dimensions as a template for wallpapers you make in the future.

i havent done it myself yet, havent needed to, or id know the dimensions to tell you hahah

    update*

in photoshop, when I take a 1024x768 size template and upscale the height to 800 pixels and set it to save proportions, it brings it to 1067x800. I would be interested to know how the stock wallpapers are sized if that is the native wallpaper resolution

Yep I opened the stock VM wallpaper that all their phones are shipped with and it is 960x800 like agentc13 said.
