What is the highest i should over clock my hero and what profile should i use
Your ROM and kernel must allow overclocking. You will also need either Overclock Widget (free on Market) or SetCPU (free version at xda for members). From there the profile you set is going to be what works best for you with your usage and time of day. SetCPU has more profiles than OC Widget. Try each and see what you like best.
As for highest OC'ing, I have mine set at 768, which is as high as it goes. That is just for peak. Most of the time the phone is probably somewhere between 480 (lowest point I set while screen is on) and 600.
You can oc to 768 but your phone may not be able to handle it so you may have to back it down.
What works awesome for one phone, the same settings may not work for another. Screen Off: Min-245, Max-352, Screen On: Min-633, Max-768
think of overclocking your processor like your heart...sure it can beat at 160 BPM, but for how long? im sure going a little faster than stock isnt going to cause any issues, but going 250mhz above what its designed for sounds like youre just trying to kill it. definately monitor the temperature if youre gonna go that high
Temperature has never been a problem here, but I would watch it
I set the top speed at 748 bottom speed stock with overclock widget.
I use oc widget also, 556-768
