There is nothing saying that the droid took the pictures they showed. There was another camera in the box taking pictures too.

After watching the video again you can see the droid was in the lid. The only pictures it took were the ones looking up at the balloon.

They have a GPS unit, a Droid, another cell phone, 2 cameras, and something else stuffed in there. It looks like they had the droid setup in the lid to take pictures (of whatever is above?), but I'm sure the ones they show are from one of the 2 digital cameras.

I see actual digital cameras in that box. I can't imagine they would be there for any other purpose than to serve as cameras.

defkorn's theory is probably right. The Droid could have also been used because it serves as both a GPS and a camera (of questionable quality).
