Homo sapiens (Humans)

I completely agree. I think humans are a terrible species.

They've evolved too quickly for their own good. Humans still retain, as a whole species, innately xenophobic instincts. Thus, anything we don't understand, we destroy, and we can't see the bigger picture of our long term actions.

I can't wait for 2063, I'm going to go and live with Vulcans or Bajorans.

+1 for misanthropy

..while on a plane, take a look out of the window, and then you'll truly appreciate what a disease we've become to this planet.

If you want to see disease, try living among the primitive tribes of the rain forests or other undeveloped areas of the world; 28 years is old age in some of those regions.

Take your pick, a developed world where you might live to expectancy of 75 to 85 years, or those beautiful forests.

That's been the choice if humankind right from the beginning.

Our xenophobia is probably one of the many reasons "aliens" don't visit.

Here's a story:
Imagine an alien family is taking a vacation to the exotic planet "Earth". On their way to land near some remote desert, let's say Roswell :p, something happens and their ship crashes. Now instead of a friendly race trying to help them repair their ship, they get taken prisoners and experimented on.

Now I'm not sure about you guys, but this wouldn't exactly be the best way to start making friends with more advanced races.

...But I have a feeling it might be like the movie (or book) The Day the Earth Stood Still.

While I don't entirly agree with the OP, the next time you're on a plane coming in to land, take a look out of the window, and then you'll truly appreciate what a disease we've become to this planet.

anyone who thinks mankind is a plague... do the world a favor and suck on the business end of a shotgun then....

It's always "everyone else is the problem" sorta thing. Seems to me that everyone just wants to say what will get them a "thanks", but it's just lipservice.

you can talk about deforestation all you want as you sit in a house or apartment that used to have woods on it.

people love to complain about BP ruining the world as they pump their SUV full of gas.

Everyone loves to shout "save the dolphins" as they eat their tuna fish sandwiches.

lipservice.... at least I'm being honest

Hmm

Wow interesting topic here guys!

The human race is filled to the brim... with scum!! Take lawyers for example hahaha lol! Humans sue each other, torture each other, rape each other and sadly.... also commit suicide too... :(....and murder each other....

But look on the bright side aswell! We are very clever too! hahaha lol

We can be very loving if we want to... i really try to be loving to every1... i try help etc instead of making it worse :)

Look at Nelson Mandela! He did absolute wonders for South Africa and human rights as a whole! He spent a long time in jail! He believed in mankind as a good thing not bad!

The human race is also very freedom loving too! Look at Jesus.... he died for what he believed in! Even though i think he was a little nuts... :)

If you took a scale and balanced out the good with the bad.... i bet the good wud out weigh the bad! Hell yeah!

:)

I am most probably going to get bombarded for my above statements... oh well :)

hahahaa lol :)

what, you're going to show me how NOT to get the olympics?

Nobody in Chicago even wanted the Olympics here. That was just emperor Daily trying to make a name for himself before he stepped down from his throne. All it did was raise our taxes even higher. And people wonder why people in Chicago are in a perpetual state of being pissed off.

your political machine did.... and I thought they were pissed because of the cubs...

but everybody ask themselves one question.... how has your life personally, been affected by the extinction of the Doe-doe bird (or however you spell it)?

I know everynight, I cry a little tear because I can never show my kids that bird.

dude.. you are missing the bigger picture...

most only see and care what affects them personal at this moment in time.
if we all did as you... we would all screwed a long time ago!

we might all be Germans ruled by Hitler's kids...or on the edge of extinction.

yeah, because if the sabertooth were still around, we'd be driving around in hover cars now huh?

Our quality of life has NOT been affected by an extinction of any animal. Well, maybe the Mammoth still being around would have allowed us to master time travel I guess, but none of the other extinctions matter.

let me give this 1 last try....

it aint about the animal(s)...or how big or small that issue is

it is about caring about all things.. and every action has reaction big or small.. it all adds up.

saving the dow-dow bird is not the point... caring to save other creatures.. raises our humanity... and our life in general.. so that our environment has better long term quality of life.. for you.. me.. and all living things.

try to see the bigger picture if you can?

that was my last try on this subject.. if you cant see.. then you cant.. and that just proves my point.. we are all screwed in the long run.

As they say, some people can't see the forest for the trees.

It's this "well it doesn't affect me directly so **** it" mentality that's ruining the world.

You're thoughts on this subject is quite narrow-minded. It shows a lack of knowledge in biodiversity and the importance of it. If you don't understand biodiversity and sustaining ecosystems, then unfortunately you can't be helped. I recommend looking up on it and then hopefully you'll understand a lot more on the importance of species extinction and the rate at which they're being extinct due to natural causes but most importantly, due to human beings.

I also agree with dan330 and IOWA in their posts above.

I understand the world has survived just fine without.....

Animals extinct this century
These animals have gone extinct since the start of the 21st century. Most of the pictures are public domain or released under a GNU or Creative Commons license (the majority are from Wikipedia). The descriptions are derived from the database maintained by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and from press releases. PIants and inverterbrates which became extinct haven't been included.

21st century extinctions:

The IUCN Red List of threatened species: www.iucnredlist.org
The Baiji Dolphin

Functionally extinct by 2006.
IUCN: database entry.
Scientific name:
Lipotes vexillifer.
An expedition organized by The Baiji Foundation in late 2006 sought evidence that Baiji white dolphins still existed in their only habitat, the Yangtze river in China. Scientists from six nations on two research vessels travelled for almost 3500 kilometres to the Yangtze Delta, and then retraced their route. They were equipped with sophisticated optical instruments and underwater microphones, but were unable to detect any surviving dolphins. The Foundation published a report on the expedition and declared the species functionally extinct. What does functionally extinct mean? It means too few potential breeding pairs remain to ensure that the species will survive.

West African Black Rhino

Probably extinct by 2006.
IUCN: database entry.
Scientific name:
Diceros bicornis longipes.
In 2006, intensive surveys were conducted to locate any surviving West African black rhinos in their last refuges in northern Cameroon. After 48 field missions, no signs were found of their continued presence, although evidence of earlier poaching remained. The IUCN issued a news release in which the chairman of the African Rhino Specialist Group stated: "As a result this subspecies has been tentatively declared as extinct."

The Golden Toad

Extinct by 2007.
IUCN: database entry.
Scientific name:
Incilius periglenes.

The Golden Toad is sometimes referred to as the Monteverde Toad or the Orange Toad. It was only known to exist on a high altitude ridge in Monteverde, Costa Rica. The IUCN database entry states: "Formerly a common species, no specimen has been seen since 1989. It last bred in normal numbers in 1987, and its breeding sites were well known." Its demise is attributed to a combination of factors, including airborne pollution and, due to its restricted range, global warming.
Craugastor escoces

Extinct by 2007.
IUCN: database entry.
Scientific name: Craugastor escoces.
This species of frog in the Leptodactylidae family does not have a widely accepted common name. It inhabited the volcano slopes of Barva, Iraz
