I just found out that some S5 s have a hotspot and tethering option in the settings. Mine of course, doesn't. When I downloaded a few different ones the phone would show a pop up saying hotspot not supported. What can I do to fix this, and would rooting my phone be a good way to get it to tether and/or have a hotspot? ? Thank you for any help and advice on what I can do.

You've got a carrier version S5 and you're in the United States, e.g. Verizon? If so, probably easiest way to fix it is to pay the tethering subscription. I've never had to deal with anything like this myself, i.e. a phone that can't tether or is disabled or not supported. I turn on the hotspot function and it goes.

As said, that is a Carrier Subscription model phone you have.

Verizon has it tied into the Data Plan package that we buy... I used to have to pay an extra fee for that, and I have bitched at them for years planning to "sue your ass" but they never listen to me.

Data is Data, why should it matter how I use my Data???
FWIW, I have the T-Shirt plan now, comes in Small, Medium, Large or Extra Large...
I chose the 6 gB/month Medium plan and Hotspot is part of that package.

I also have a JetPack MiFi off air router that is faster than Hotspot is, by a bunch!!!
go figure, you would think they would give the same download speeds, but they don't.
