Help How do apps use data ??

Hi Gang, I just got a LG 540R from Rogers without a data plan and then realized i needed a data plan so i got set up with 100MB a month. My question is how much data do apps. use? Is it by the hour when your using the app is it when you download the app? Am i in trouble with only 100MB a month? This is my first smartphone and have very limited computer skills. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Depends on the app, if the app needs internet access , well that's obvious...

most social related apps, need internet conections to keep track of your updates,some apps require to download files from their developer servers, some apps send data to third party servers with usage statics, bugs, etc...

also there's an app to measure your data usage
