I've looked all over this forum, but can't find instructions on unrooting my phone.

As a secondary question, does anyone know if rooting the phone invalidates the warranty on the hardware? I'm having a lot of issues with the back key and want to return the phone tomorrow.

I downloaded all of the files. So the instructions say to "install RSDLite", but with a .7z file extension I have no idea how I'm supposed to install this software.

I'm thinking the easiest thing to do is to "lose" the phone, pay my $50 insurance copay and be done with it. This phone has become so unreliable that it's almost completely useless to me. I am missing my Blackberry right now.

You can always lose the phone in the mail by sending it to my address. Would be kinda nice having a lab rat droid around.

I am thinking I agree with you. I mean absolutely no disrespect here, but the directions on how to unroot are very well written. I am thinking you are in WAY over your head by owning a rooted phone, and probably should leave RSD alone before you brick your phone completely.

It would have been much more appreciated if you would have helped me with the question instead of criticizing. I'm a fairly sophisticated user, and I work in the IT world and have a great understanding of how technology works....and I can follow directions.

I'm certainly smart enough to have rooted in the first place, been able to switch ROMs many many times, but I'm frustrated by having a f***ed up phone that won't let me conduct my business effectively.

You need the 7zip shareware to unstuff the .7z file on your Windows computer, to install the RSDLite.exe which it contains.

You say you're a sophisticated user and work in the IT world but have no idea what a 7z file is? SMH at the that one.. and the GTFOH with the attitude.

Works in IT and doesn't know 7z.. wow.. how about searching for what a 7z file is?

Unbelievable - congrats on your soon to be paperweight.

If you are a sophisticated user and great at following instructions then this thread is redundant, as you already have very easy to follow instructions which were linked to you previously.

    Good luck.

I can see this thread being locked quick with all this back and forth fighting.

Anyhow. This is a place for help. If you can't contribute to the topic then don't post. If he wants to risk bricking his phone then so be it. Anyone who wants to root or unroot their phone takes that risk.

7zip is commonly used in Linux. You can download the tool from here: Download

Winrar will also unzip this file, and you can find that tool here: WinRAR archiver, a powerful tool to process RAR and ZIP files

Hope this helps and good luck with your phone!

I've started the process of unrooting with RSD Lite, but I get an immediate error message when I try to start it. I've checked the log and this is the error I receive:

    21:28:40, June 08, 2010
    Line: 865
ERROR: \\?\c:\droid\unroot\vzw_a855_esd56_qsc6085bp_c_01.3e.01p_sw_update_03.sbf contains an invalid path.
    File: X:\test_dev_usb\flash\code\flashdll\PST_FP_FlashFileIO.cpp
    21:28:40, June 08, 2010
    Line: 542
ERROR: The superfile specified does not exist
    File: X:\test_dev_usb\flash\code\flashdll\FlashHdlr.cpp
    Device ID: 0

Any thoughts as to how I fix this? I've started RSD as an admin, loaded all the drivers and followed all the directions.

RDS Lite errors in log file:
    ... contains an invalid path.
The superfile specified does not exist ...

Solution (Worked for me in Vista):
Copy the file into the SAME directory as the RSD Lite program.
    Usually: C:\Program Files\Motorola\RSD Lite

Open your File Explorer to the RSD Lite directory, and run SDL.exe as Administrator.

If you have problems running as Administrator, try this alternate solution:
Control Panel --> User Accounts --> Turn user acount control on/off
UNCHECK - Use User Account Control (UAC)
    Select OK

(Don't forget to set UAC again once you're finished!)

Can't you just flash a stock image w/ ROM Manager?

Yup, this would probably have been the easiest method and it's free.

Sometimes it's the obvious little things that I completely miss lol...

I keep forgetting that that option is available to even users of the free version....
