How do you know if you get a text msg on silent

I am looking into buying the new Moto G5 Plus and didn't see any kind of LED notification light on it. I was reading the G4 plus does not have one either.

At work I lay my phone on my desk on vibrate, if I don't hear the vibrate I can still see the little LED light pulsate to know I got a text message.

On the Moto G phones, do you constantly have to keep turning your screens on to see if you got a message when on silent?
There is no visual indicator when the screen is off?

From memory I believe the notification symbol shows up even on a dark screen ( might have to enable in the Moto app)
