Help How do you know when you drop from 3G to 1X?

I've never seen the 3G icon convert to a 1X icon, but I ran the SpeedTest.net app and based on those speeds, I have probable cause to believe that I was on a 1X data connection. I'm currently attending college in a mid-sized suburban college town that's surrounded by rural and forest landscape, so I expect that I might lose 3G in some areas, but how can I tell for sure?

That's impossible. There is no 1X icon! 1X displays as 3G so there is no way to tell.
