How long should "Running root" take?

Simple question really. I've had various error messages and failures from unrevoked 3.21 along the way; I'm part way through the most promising attempt yet and it has been stuck on "running root" for about 45 minutes. Should I be done by now? Any ideas how to get the phone to progress?

Whole process should take about 10 minutes if that.

    What are your specs?
Have you made any modifications along the way?

    hboot is 0.93.0001
Orange branded, had it just over 12 months.
    No modifications to speak of.
Have stripped out a load of apps to make space.

Gave up, have closed unrevoked and started running it again. Seems to be a very temperamental process!

    See what happens...glad to know it's a 10 minute process I'm expecting.
    thanks!

Looks like it's stuck on 'Running root...' again.

Getting quite pissed off with trying to root this phone! Am running 2.2 - Orange don't seem interested in issuing 2.3. Is that a problem? Anyone got any ideas how to get around this?

Will leave phone on 'Running root...' all night and maybe it'll sort itself out.

Just wanted to check that your following the guides provided by suroot and carried out the various checks such as which recovery to use etc
I followed them and it only took the 10 heart stopping mins

2.2 shouldn't be a problem - if you had used the 2.3 update (from HTC, not Orange - there won't be a 2.3 update from any of the networks) you'd need to use a different tool to root.

I just did a little search on this, and found a post from myself from when I first rooted, which said that I had had this problem (knew my first attempt had failed, hadn't remembered that was the issue). That post included the following description of my second attempt: "and following a hint on the Unrevoked webpage I put the phone into disk mode when I connected". So maybe that would be worth a try, because I do remember that my second attempt just breezed through very quickly (though that may just have been coincidence!).

Thanks everyone, downloaded everything I wanted off the phone, backed up contacts to the SD card, did a factory reset and tried unrevoked again. Fail.

I've been following SURoots guide to the letter.

Tried the whole Visionary thing and got the permroot to work through that. The world feels like my Oyster...

    Thanks again!
