Poll closed Aug 28, 2010.
  1. Nothing. Dev's do it because they like this stuff.

I rooted with with the 1-touch root method and I'm running xtrSENSE4.0.6.1. I love my new phone but don't really know what is reasonable for the dev's hard work. zach.xtr doesn't want donations but suggests to donate to all those who made his ROM possible (about 10 people). A good app can cost upwards of $5 but that's a lot of money when so many people are involved. What have YOU donated?

My favorite developer, zach of xtrROM fame, accepts no donations for his work. As explained to me in a PM at XDA a while back, he prefers to have money sent to the originators of the kernel that is the base for most of the ROMs that we're using.

His PM in response to my request as to how to get donations to him:

"Thanks for the thought but no worries [IMG] This is currently my play time and as long as I am having fun and folks continue to recieve my work well I am happy to just be reworded with knowledge."

"If you would still like to donate consider giving it to dsixda. He is the author of the kitchen that the majority of the devs use to help build the ROMs we publish."

So, dsixda at XDA forums.. find him and pay him, please:

    dsixda's donate link to PayPal .. https://www.paypal.com/ca/cgi-bin/w...63663d3faee8d4b3d02051cb40a5393d96fec50118c72

As for other ROM developers, I've sent (more than the maximum listed in this poll) to several of them and encourage all rooted ROM users to pay these guys as much as you can afford.. we're getting free operating systems from them, after all. ;)

for me, just receiving any amount feels good. not all people can afford a large donation and we get that. it just feels nice to be acknowledged.

just donate what you can, no reason to be extravagant, but dont be stingy and donate a dollar unless thats all you can afford.

Your work on the ROMs you develop, along with the ongoing support you provide here every day is worth a lot to users of your products, andrizoid. I'm hoping they're responding with what they can afford.

Are you talking apps, ROMS, or what?

I have yet to pay a dime for an app on iOS or Android. The one I would consider is easy-root, which I never used, because it appears to take out most of the risks of rooting and makes a twenty minute, or so, job and turns it in to less than a minute, I think,

Other than that, a good number of apps are by big businesses and don't give a hoot about the quality of the app, so I help myself to unlimited trials of them.

That's a good question, come to think further of it; it appears that the majority assumption at this early point in the poll is that the OP is referring to developers of ROMs.

But is it meant for apps? Both?

I've donated to devs of apps, themes and roms. If I think that their work is good I gladly donate because I want them to continue with their work and I get to continue to use great products. I think it's funny that so many just expect people to provide these things for free. I applaud the devs that don't want monetary rewards because they're just doing it for fun on the side. But it consumes a lot of time to produce a great product so I don't expect them to do it for free.

I have donated to ROM developers, yes. If I really like an app that has a pro version, I generally buy the pro, again, to support the developer, and hopefully encourage them to keep developing more apps.

Mostly ROM's. I feel the same about the apps. Most free apps are ad supported so they're making money. The dev's and others with a wealth of info here and at xda deserve something and I want to know that I'm supporting them and not being cheap. Like eating out, I make sure I leave at least 20% unless the help was so bad that I won't come back.

ive donated 34 bucks to various devs since ive had root (2 1/2 months). if i have the extra money and i like a devs work, they will be getting a donation from me, even if i dont necessarily like the rom, ill toss a couple bucks for the work theyve put in.

imho, android wouldnt be what it is today if it werent for the devs. so pay these dude whatever you can afford!

I've bought enough paid ones I dont feel the need to donate. If I see something I want and they make it pay or donate only I'll buy it. Otherwise I assume they must be getting paid by employment or ads or doing it out of the goodness of their occupation (or perhaps to work on their skills). Who the heck knows how it works but there's got to be a good reason half the market is free. Perhaps they make their money developing non andriod stuff lol.

Typically I don't donate for apps...if I can't find an app I want for free, I will buy it, but that's about it.

ROM's are different. I donate for roms. If it wasn't for the devs working on roms, we would all still be stuck with no root and running 1.5.

Andrizoid has been the most hands on dev I have encountered so far. Pretty much always willing and able to help. His ROMs are pretty flawless too...

I support hookin' the devs up. We all should be at least buying them a donut or eclaire!

I feel like most Devs don't deserve money when all they do is copy other roms and add their own small things to it. The creator of Cyanogen Mod deserves donations for example and I can't tell you how many ROMs I've seen created around the Cyanogen Mod.

CM really does do some hard work.

Donations should be optional, as they are. I'm sure it takes time and patience and a lot of work to make it work on the devs' end, but if it isn't your primary source of income, then it should not be an issue at all.

There used to be tons of posts where people said "it's just a phone" when people complained about their problems. I adopt a similar ideology, that it's just a phone and doesn't warrant it being a business, the hacking community.

After trying all the ROMs out there, the ones I enjoy the most are just the stock ones. The latest FRG22D released by Peter seems to work best for me. I don't need the themes, icons, and all that other jazz. Some do. Charge them.

I donate when I can, what I can, to ROM devs and app devs alike. I figure if they've put the work into something I use every day and enjoy using, it's worth a few bucks from me.
