I have a ZTE Axon 7 with a China Unicom sim card. I live in China where everything Google is blocked without a VPN. I need to block Google speech recognition from trying accessing any network when in use. I need it to automatically assume I'm offline. I've downloaded the offline language pack, but Google will not use that unless it thinks I don't have an internet connection. So in order to use this service to send a message I have to first go through the hassle of connecting my VPN or putting my phone in airplane mode and then taking it out of airplane to send the message. I looked in my apps section but couldn't tell which service/app specifically contributed to this feature. Any help would be appreciated!

Unfortunately it doesn't know about the Great Firewall of China, so it either assumes it's online and won't take no for an answer, or you have to turn the internet off. It's a common problem with expats and tourists in China. I usually recommend leaving your VPN on all the time, if depending on Google Services.

FWIW I use ExpressVPN, upto 3 devices, unlimited time and data, and don't find it a hassle at all.

You don't find that it drains your battery when you are on data or slows down your wechat?
