How to disable email

I am wanting to disable email sync whilst in the office and then enable downloading of emails while out of the office as I have no need to download emails to my phone whilst I am sitting in front of my computer.

I have read a thread which suggests using the update schedule (Email > settings > Send and Receive > Update Schedule) and setting to 1 day schedule for when I do not require emails to be downloaded i.e when I am in the office.

The problem is that when I revert back to 5 min schedule (when I actually want to recieve emails via my phone) I recieve all the emails from the point at which I set the schedule update to once daily.

In other words, I do not want to download the emails that I viewed on my pc whilst I was in the office.

Is it possible to disable email for a few hours and then re-enable email without then receiving all the emails that were sent during the preiod for which I did not want to receive emails.

I presume that the issue lies between my email server and the telephone service provider's email server - I need to easily stop and start communication between the two.

Thank you in advance,
Simon

Hi there.

What you are describing is possible. To deactivate your email checks, you set up a active sync account. Then on your home screen use a widget that you find under: Home screen -> Tap and hold on an empty spot -> Personalize menu comes up -> hit widgets -> scroll down to settings -> chose Data Dashboard.

On the empty spot you tapped, there should be the widget you selected. The second from the right button is called "Auto-sync". Just tap this to disable all active syncs when you are at your office, and tap again to reactive when you leave your office.

However, as for the point about the "refreshing" of your email list, the only way to do this, is to use the IMAP protocol for the email server connection. It's the only protocol (at least as far as I know, between push, POP3, etc) that will actually actively administrate "status" of emails (meaning: read, stored in drafts, new, replied, etc.). Only danger with this protocol, is that if you accidentally delete something one place, and a update happens, then the email will be deleted at all places and "nonrecoverable".

Hope this helps :D Good luck

EDIT: I have now played a bit with the settings, and discovered that only a "push active exchange" profile will be able to use active sync. IMAP and POP3 will not be able to be activated/deactivated by active sync button, unfortunately. Sorry about this, I personally have not set up a email account before right now, I only use gmail on my phone.

Further more, I see your problem about downloading "new" messages you already have read. There is no option in the email program to only download new messages (however with IMAP that won't be necessary), and at the same time be able to set up a "check" time as you want. I found the option to control the "peak" times of the day when the program checks for emails, but I'm guessing that does not help you :(
