How to disable "heads up" (popup) notifications in Lollipop?

A little background here,
http://androidforums.com/android-lounge/873585-android-l-ux-decisions-vs-preferences-pop-ups.html

In that thread I wondered if google was going in the right direction with their pop up notifications. This morning I flashed the leaked final Lollipop build for my 2012 Nexus 7 dev tablet. After playing around with it for just 5 minutes and receiving hang out messages galore while trying to read browse the settings menu and play store, I've come to the conclusion that my opinion was in fact correct - these pop up notifications make me want to send kittens to meet their maker - violently.

I can't stand them... I really want to have the pre-lollipop notification system back and I was told that the pop up notifications could be disabled - however I'm not finding that option available anywhere in the settings. Anyone know if thats available or am I SOL?

Thanks in advance.

I too would love to be able to disable the pop ups for everything except phone calls. Whoever thought this was a great idea should be fired. The whole point of the notification shade was to prevent interruptions!

I may have found a solution. Go to sounds and notifications in the settings menu, then click interruptions. Try changing the first setting to don't interrupt.

*Edit
It doesn't work.

Quite honestly i prefer them over the super-cluttered status bar Android has had since day one. coming from iOS the pop-up notifications don't bother me, just adds one nice thing i miss about Apple.

Try to follow these video steps and you will be able to disable heads up notification you must have a root access device

Mod edit - Youtube video removed as it contains an illegitimate download link to an app which is paid on Play

So seriously, it takes root to disable heads up??
The only experience I have with lollipop was a custom rom and they could be disabled.
I like them so I kept them but I can see how much of a pita they must be for people!

Same here.

They're not fantastic, but I can live with them. Also, from experience, there are 3rd Party apps which handle them much better than the OS does.

This tutorial for the original rom and not for any custom rom.
there's no switches to disable this annoying notifications on the original rom but by following these easy steps you will be able to remove this popup
All you need is a rooted device and some kind of patience

I no longer have root but i got rid of them completely. "Heads up notifications" are called Interruptions and Priority Interruptions, depending on how much you want. Goto Settings>Device>Sounds & Notifications>Interruptions and adjust them to how you want them. I completely loathe them so I don't have them anymore at all. I bought this phone to use as a digitizer for my work. Prior to the update, having had no interruptions (aptly named) every 5 seconds, I couldn't work on my art or read to my kids in peace. What the hell were they thinking? I couldn't listen to music or watch videos

The worst part is it came on all night causing my battery to get hot for some reason, which NEVER happened prior to the update. I am convinced that updates are created to break our phones so we'll buy more. Either that or they are incompetent. Or a little of both. Anyway, hope this helps.

Advents post is pretty slick. I'm always game for stuff like classic Linux consoles haha! I might turn mine off then turn it back on just for the heck of it!

I got used to them in the kitkat roms and now couldn't be without them. It just stops you having to pull down the notification drawer without being too intrusive

I don't see that phrase so either I'm missing it or he's taken your advice :thumbsupdroid:
Anyone tried it yet btw? Does it work smoothly?

OK I might have found out the solution for this problem
Last night I was trying to figure out what to do about this just like you all and then I happened to come across this app called "Heads Off - Ticker on"
I installed and just started the app and now those heads up are gone.. Just the notification is seen.. I'm satisfied with this app. You could give it a try.
