Hi, this is the Google keyboard selected on my HTC M9, if I long press and hold the 'return' key (bottom right) the emoji icon appears - slide on to it and release and the emojis are available. Tap ABC to return to normal.

Is it not the same on your device?

Android 4.2, it's monochrome emoji. Nicer looking colour emoji was added with 4.3 version Android I think. If it's a Nexus device you've got, should be able to update it.

    But how to update?

You'd have to use a custom ROM because I don't think the Galaxy Nexus was officially updated beyond 4.2.1, although have you actually checked for updates in settings? A custom ROM like CM11, which is 4.4 Kitkat should be no problem with a Galaxy Nexus though. http://www.cyanogenmod.org/
