A colleague recently purchased an Acer android phone and there is no Google Market (there is something called Slide Sam 4.0 that has different stuff).
Is there a way of adding google market or do we need to root and flash this thing first?

    thanks! -t

I would think you need to root to install it. Some people say to root then flash a ROM that includes it. Others say just to install the vending.apk and the marketupdater.apk.

Just google those files see what you come across. Not sure what version of Android you are running.

Okay go to Settings-->About Phone. Let me know what the Build # is and what the Android Version is.

    Report what it says.

Okay, you can try a couple of things. One which voids your warranty and one which keeps your warranty intact.

    1) Root (this voids your warranty) the phone and manually install the Market- See Post #13 on this- Market missing 2.1 - Android @ MoDaCo
Instructions on rooting the device can be found here-

-Install MalezRecovery using this guide here- howToInstall - acer-liquid-malez-recovery - Project Hosting on Google Code (credits to Malez, all Downloads are on the Google Code page above).
-Reboot into MalezRecovery (instructions are in the guide above)
-Root stock ROM by going into System Root Menu-->Root Current System-->Select a Root method (differences in Root methods can be found here- Issue 8 - acer-liquid-malez-recovery - Differences in root methods explained - Project Hosting on Google Code ). I think most people use 1.1

    2) Back up everything and download the 4.002.14.EMEA.GEN1 FroYo package from the Acer website- http://global-download.acer.com/Ste...+E&BC=Acer&SC&LC=en&OS=a04&FS=O01&Category=OS . Not 100% sure if this would work BUT I think it should since it is the only EMEA update package available. If it doesn't work, there is a way to manually install it (without rooting but still voids warranty).

    Let me know your progress.

Thanks, I downloaded the Froyo package but the Acer Setup Tool will notinstall this over EMEA_GEN4. So what would be the way to install it manually and is it safe or should I go for the rooting solution?

Oh damn, it didn't work. Does not make sense why Acer would release an update for most but not all phones. Silly Acer.

As far as installing it manually being safe, I feel so. I have flashed many bins (from Donut to several leaks of Eclair, to several unofficial/official Froyo bins) with no problems (as have many other people). There have a been some (not many) people who have had problems but it is a very small percentage.

I would recommend doing it on a full battery (at least 75%) and on a reliable computer (one that can't randomly shut off).

Once you start flashing, do not touch the phone until the process is finished and you should be fine. There will be points during the flash when it says "Not Connected" but this should only last for less than a minute.

First: Find a .bin- Acer Liquid, Liquid E, Liquid Metal ALL ROMs bin extract collection - Android @ MoDaCo (newest ones are on the bottom, I'd recommend 4.002.14.EMEA.GEN1 since it is the latest European bin. MAKE SURE THAT IS FOR LIQUID E 512MB OF RAM)

Second: Follow these instructions- [TUTORIAL] How to flash .bin files on Acer Liquid/E - Android @ MoDaCo

If anything goes wrong, refer to this- [TIP] Dont try to restart phone during flash if it looses connection, or u will have a bricked liquid! [MOD PLEASE STICKY!] - Android @ MoDaCo (only do this if it isn't connected for several minutes).
