(Full disclosure, I'm asking this on behalf of my wife and her Nexus S 4G)

So apparently Gmail saves EVERY email address that you've ever sent an email to or received an email from as a contact. When my wife set up her Nexus S 4G with her Gmail account, the phone downloaded every one of those email addresses into her Contacts. This is not what she (and I'd assume most people) would want. So I have a few questions:

    1) Has everyone else experienced this? Is there any way around it?
    2) If she goes through and deletes those contact from her phone, will it also remove them from her Gmail account
    3) Is there any way to organize your contacts native to the Nexus or via an app? (e.g. put them in groups, control which contacts are displayed, etc)

I hope these aren't dumb questions, we're both brand new android users (i.e. <24 hours).

    Thanks,
    JP

I'm a new user as well, but I'm on my 2nd android phone... brother gave me his old Hero a couple of weeks ago and I bought a Nexus today. It did sync all my original contacts on the Hero when I first activated it, I went through and deleted the ones I didn't want. The deleted ones did not sync to my new phone today.

all you have to do it delete any unwanted contacts from you PC & it will be deleted from you NS4G as well. this also works the other way around as well. you also have a "display option" in your contact screen where you can select only show contacts with phone #'s as well as how they're sorted(see screenshot below). hopefully this info will help...

    Hi,

Actually this doesn't help. I do not want to delete the contacts from GMAIL that I do not want included as contact on my Nexus.

The second option where you select only phone#'s helps a little, but really what we want is to only have contacts in our Nexus that are on the SIM card.

I have another question around displaying and managing contacts (eg deleting ) on the Nexus, as after importing from my SIM, contacts do not display. But I will establish a new thread for this issue.

You can select to only sync contacts with phone numbers so that it doesn't add someone who you only have email contact with.

You can also tell it to remove duplicates. For example, my friend has his full name associated with his FB account and I had just his first name manually entered on my contacts so it created to slots for him. You can tell Gmail (under Contacts) to scan for duplicates and it will suggest deletions.

Other than that the best way is to simply remove them in Gmail (as it's faster than on your phone) and your phone will sync with Gmail and update accordingly.

i think what youre looking for is under your contacts, hit menu, then accounts, then turn the sync from gmail off

    hope that helps

Not sure if you still need help, but go to gmail contacts. Check ONLY the contacts you want on your phone and add them to My Contacts list.

Then go Contacts > Menu > Display Options > Select your google account > Check "System Group: My Contacts".

Then in the same place ensure that "All other contacts" is unchecked.

    That should do it.
