How to preserve data across ROM flashes?

I watch the flashing discussion with interest.

I have one question to ask:
How can I preserve all my data and history across multiple ROM flashes?
What is the procedure?
Where are the data stored?

I dont know what tablet your using, but it has been suggested that with the zt180 you can do that by NOT updating the userdata.img file.

but I havenmt tried it myself yet, I may if they deliver the next killer rom thats hsould be out tday
