I have a question that will probably sound crazy but here goes:

There have been serveral times when I have needed my phone battery to last for a long time due to forgetting the power cord or various other reasons. Is there any way to do something to make the phone shut down everything but the ability to make a call or text?

I know how to go into applications and shut down obvious applications like Weather Bug. But is there other things I should shut down?

Also, I guess I should ask if there is an app for that.

Another scenario would be getting lost in the woods and needing to preserve the phone battery as long a possible. (I proabably watch to many movies)

You can go to the Settings. Go to Wireless and Networks, go to Mobile networks and uncheck "data enabled." I do that when I have other means of connecting to the internet. I often get two to three days of use from my phone before recharging. This way your phone/text work, but you have no internet (3G) access.

What elhamda said. Also, a couple of extra batteries can be gotten for under $10 on ebay. I bring mine camping.

I use Widgetsoid, there are a great number of toggles you can add to a bar and place on a home screen.

Thanks alot for the advice guys. This was what I was looking for.

And by way, I do have an extra battery. I was talking about when you are away from a power source for un-expected reasons.

I use the app Quick Settings which parks in my notifications window. One button disables the data connection and the battery lasts seemingly forever. Especially useful if you are going to be out of range or inside the whole time. My phone has burned itself up in six hours constantly re-negotiating a 3G connection right on the edge of cell contact. But, cut off the 3G, and use just text messaging, and it lasted nearly two days of regular texting communication with no bars. No phone calls would go through, but texts only had a 10% failure rate.
