how to retrieve deleted pictures

I was in the process of transfering phones and I accidentally deleted the pictures on my phone, how can I retrieve them?

If they were on a removable SD card then ordinary file retrieval software will work. Just mount the card as a USB drive on a computer (not MTP, which is the default in Android 4) and run file recovery software - if you use Windows, Recuva has been recommended by many and is free. If your phone won't mount the card as a USB drive, a card reader is inexpensive.

However, if the photos were on phone storage (non-removable) you may be stuck. Unless it can be mounted as a USB drive standard file recovery software won't be able to do anything, and in recent phones this isn't generally possible.
