Just like the title says, everything on here is dedicated to windows...but I don't have access to a windows device, so I'm looking for step by step instructions on how to do it? z4root does not work, the application closes.

Use Gingerbreak. You root right from your phone. Try to see if you have fastboot first, though.

Search 'gingerbreak" at xda forums. One click root. After you root down terminal emulator and enter
    Code (Text):
    1. su
    then accept super user permissions
    Code (Text):
    1.
    2. reboot bootloader
if you reboot into a blue screen then you have fasoboot. If you just reboot then consider finding a friend with windows xp or 7 to use LGNPST or LGMU (program in the 2.2 root guide) to downgrade and get fastboot. There a whole thread on the WHY you want fastboot. If not you can use GNM's guide to manuaally flash the latest amonra recovery or use ROM manager to flash clockwork the alt recovery ra_anm. . . . . You may need to deleter /system/ect/install-recovery.sh or rename it to install-recoverym.sh.bak easiest way would be adb or teminal but you can download "root explorer"-paid of "antek file. ."-free with a custom recovery you can make and restore nandroids (complete copy of the phones state. I can post links to everything tomorrow if someone doesnt beat me to it ro you can find it yourself.

The windows guide for rooting the Ally using the methods described above is quite simple as long as you follow the directions properly. Happy rooting!

You dont "install" fastboot. You have to downgrade to the original software 2.1 zv6 to get access. You can use lgnpst or lgmu (from the root guide) to do a full flash of the original firmware for the phone.

Well what work? Lgnpst will work on anything, I think gingerbreak will work on 2.2.1 as well. Not real sure what you were asking
