Does anybody know how to disable the phone from automatically choosing a cellular network?

I live near the border of the country and the neighbouring networks are stronger, so the phone often switches to a roaming network. Is there any way to turn it off, maybe via an (unofficial) app?

One option is to ask the carrier to disable it, but then again, everytime I would travel abroad, I would have to contact the carrier, and then back again when I return.

Turn off "Automatically choose network operators" in the network settings.

I'm trying to do that on a Galaxy Spica (firmware 1.5 Cupcake), and I don't see any of this option on the phone..

Oh boy, Cupcake, that takes me back. I'm not sure you can do it on Android that far back.
