Root [how to]unlock, install recovery, and root with htcdev

C:\android>md5sums ace_recovery_ext_4.img
'md5sums' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

sounds like youre not using my "miniadb" download, wich contains the md5sums utility.

if youre using the standard skd,you can either: transplant the "md5sums" utility from the miniadb download,or simply use a different md5 checker on your PC to verify the files integrity.

Thanks, OP. This guide was super easy to follow and worked like a charm (once I had the correct version of hboot, that is.)

For those with Macintosh OS, the fastboot and adb commands in the mini-adb.zip won't quite work. Create a new folder, and copy over the adb.exe into it. For the fastboot commands, go to the htcdev website and download the Macintosh fastboot-mac unix executable file. Copy this into the same folder as the adb.exe. When running the fastboot oem get_identifier_token command (and any fastboot command thereafter), you'll have to type ./fastboot into the terminal.

Hopefully this saves someone from much frustration.

Hi. Thanks for making such a nice tutorial, perhaps the only one on rooting which makes some sense and made me confident that i can root too. I recieved a network unlocked AT&T HTC Desire HD (inspire 4g as mentioned in software detail). It has a problem that it shows GPS on but can't find any satellites. Considering it a software issue as the "Dish" symbol doesnt stops blinking even when GPS is turned off, I wanted to root it to install a better ROM. Previously tried the AAHK, but it failed to make any changes. From your tutorial I learnt that the boot loader may need to be upgraded (as it also didnt give the token data). The boot loader shows following data

ACE PVT SHIP S-OFF RL
HBOOT-0.85.0024
MICROP-0438
RADIO-26.03.02.08_M
eMMC-boot
Apr 12 2011,00:55:45
FASTBOOT
RECOVERY
FACTORY RESET
SIMLOCK
IMAGE CRC

Tried both the files provided by you for Bootloader upgrade and alos the exe file present on the HTCDev site. The exe file ends saying that software upgrade is not currently available for my firmware. The zip file, both after renaming as advised and without renaming doesn't work too in the HBOOT (doesn't detect the zip file for upgrade and runs as usual). Had formatted the SD Card in FAT32 both with and without Quick Format option, but no use. The card I am using is 2GB Class 2 microSD card. Btw... The Fastboot option in the phone setting was on all the time. Can it be the cause of failure.?? :(
Using Windows 7. All drivers for HTC are properly installed as I also got my HTC Explorer boot loader unlocked by getting the guidance from your tutorial. Checked on two PCs, one of which had completely fresh installation of Windows 7, done just for this purpose. Please help. I shall be really thankful.

what prollem are you having? you are allready s off,so you do not need this guide,or the s-off guide  :D

do you have drivers working? if so,put the phone in fastboot(select from hboot menu) and then

fastboot devices

then

fastboot getvar all

and paste the resulting output, making sure to x out your meid and esn. this will tell us your cid and current build. :) we are assuming both to be att,but when a phone has been modded, we shouldnt assume anything ;)

Done!

that is correct! all you need to do is install recovery and flash superuser,or flash a custom rom.

from the above, you are not supercid, wich is somewhat odd. i would prolly recomend to change the CID to 11111111(supercid) to make flashing files in hboot easier.

refer to this thread:
http://androidforums.com/desire-hd-all-things-root/716369-unroot-desire-hd-file-ruu.html

i believe the supercid directions start on page 2. there is also a link in that thrhead to update the radio and install recovery.

just holler if you have questions :)

Thanks for the wonderful guidance .. The set can use any network's SIM I use. Maybe it was network opened by the ATT themselves. I am clueless as to how its doing this or how it was opened cuz it was all done before I got it.. :D
Well... I'll try to install recovery etc in it and will update soon. Will certainly check the thread you advised. Thanks again for your support and help.. :D

Also tried putting the zip file as PD98IMG.zip in the root of the FAT32 formatted SD card but the hboot didnt even notice it.

Now, from experience of other users in different posts of this thread, if considering that the bootloader is still locked, I don't have the unlock.bin file from the HTCDev, which may be used to unlock this phone, and the HTCDev is giving no option to unlock it by any other way.

what you are experiencing is correct, and expected. you cannot use fastboot flash or fastboot boot without an eng hboot,or an unlocked htcdev hboot.

the thread i linked goes into great detail how to flash things with a normal hboot. have you read thru it? i have directed you there,so we dont have to retype all that same info ;)

the sd card method may be failing due to an improperly named file,or an improper format on the sd card.

post #27 has directions to flash the PD98IMG from fastboot, leaving proper name and sd card format out of the equation. if you get a cid or model id failure(i dont think you will,i believe the recoveries i packed up contain an att android info document),the thread also explains how to modify the text document inside so you can get it to flash.

post #51 contains directions to superCID. you dont really have to do this, but it will make flashing files in hboot much easier for you. if you stay with your at&t cid(CWS__001) you will need to modify every zip file you flash to contain the att android info text document. with supercid, there are no cid or model id checks,so it wont matter what info is on the text document, very much like how s-off eliminates the main version and signiture checks.

home that makes sense.

i went ahead and and uploaded a "back to stock firmware" zip file containing the att android info document,so you should have minimal prollems following the directions in post #51. just use that download instead of the ORANG01 file linked. and youll have to change the name in the "flash zip command":
fastboot flash zip backtostock-firmware-ATTcid.zip instead of fastboot flash zip backtostock-firmware-orangcid.zip

backtostock-firmware-ATTcid.zip

hope that clears things up for you :)

this is a device specific-thread to help you unlock, install a recovery, and root your HTC Inspire 4g/Desire HD(model ACE). this guide originated for the htc rezound, thus some of the names and references. however, all files and info are specially for the inspire/DHD.

first and foremost, htcdev is a PITA. it has limitations if you are a "hardcore" rom flasher/rooter/romer. while it may be fine for the folks that want to be completely stock and have root acces to delete some bloatware, and run root required apps,s-off is better, and worth the extra efforts to achieve,IMO.

for those of us that want complete freedom to mod our devices, htcdev is still a valuable, and a solid, reliable means of adding root acces for other exploits.

and now,on with the info!

the basic steps will be:
1)unlock with htcdev
2)temporarily or permanently flash a recovery
3)flash root files

before you start,go ahead and download these files:
-mini-adb.zip: mini-adb.zip
-ext 4 recovery for ACE: PD98IMG_ace_recovery_ext_4.zip
(MD5: PD98IMG_ace_recovery_ext_4.zip fc0f377f7d91ce5dc1f415f7bc72284d
)

-superuser files: for GB or ICS,use the latest superSU from this thread on xda (the download link is where is says: CWM installable ZIP: CWM-SuperSU-v0.96.zip )
-go to HTCdev - Unlock Bootloader and register an account

1)unlock with htcdev
first thing you need is drivers for adb to see your phone. if you have htc sync installed, you should allready have drivers. if not,you can install htc sync,or install these modified htc drivers from revolutionary (driver mirror)

most guides simply say "follow the directions to unlock with htcdev" but im gonna go thru it with ya :) the mini-adb.zip file is all the files that htcdev is telling you to download and put into a folder,so allready this should be a lil easier ;)

1)prepair ADB
-unzip your mini-adb.zip file. this is native funtionality in windows 7. you otherwise may need a utility such as "7-zip" to extract,or unzip it. place the unzipped folder onto the root of your C drive on your PC(sorry, you mac guys will need to develop this for yourself,i dont have a mac). root means the top level, not inside any folders. so just copy and paste,or drag and drop the folder onto C with everything else that is there. you may want to rename it to "mini-adb_devicename" since youll be putting some device specific files in here. (directions from here forward will assume this folder to be named "mini-adb_vigor",as an example)
-open a command window. on windows 7,click the start bubble in the lower left and type "command" in the search box. xp i believe is similar or the same. doing this should open a small black command window.
-change to your mini-adb_vigor directory. type the following at the prompt in your cmd window:

cd c:\mini-adb_vigor

your command promt should change to "c:mini-adb_vigor>" provided you: 1)unzipped the miniadb zip 2)put the folder on your c drive 3)entered the name of the folder correctly ("mini-adb_vigor" in this case)

-now make sure usb debugging is checked in settings/apps/development,and plug your phone into your PC with a usb cable
-make sure your phone is being recognized- type:

adb devices

if your drivers are installed correctly, this should return your phones serial number. you should hear the "found device" noises when you plug your phone in. if it starts installing drivers, wait for it to finish before typing the adb devices command.

2)unlock using htcdev
-go to HTCdev - Unlock Bootloader and sign in to your account. chose your device from the "select your device bar"(or "other supported devices" if its not listed) and click the green "begin unlock bootloader" button underneath.
-click yes to procede, then read the warnings before checking the boxes and clicking yes to continue,as they are basically explaining that your warranty is now void, and any repairs that your phone needs that may have been a result of unlocking your bootloader and messing with your phones operating system may no longer be covered under mfgr warranty

*check your hboot screen. if you allready have an htc compatible hboot, then skip ahead to the next step, you dont need this.if you have a pink **locked** at the top of the hboot screen, then it is compatible with htcdev. if you dont have a compatible hboot, then download the RUU for the new hboot. right click it,and run as administrator. plug in your phone when prompted to. it will ugrade your hboot to the htcdev unlock compatible version.

-steps 1-4 are describing how to get your phone into bootloader mode and connect it to your PC,wich we have done above. ignore these steps and simply type in your cmd window:

adb reboot bootloader

it may take several seconds, but this command should boot your phone into the "fastboot" screen wich is white with a bunch of colored writing. once this happens, make sure your phone is still being seen in fastboot. type:

fastboot devices

again, this should return your phones serial number.

-click the green procede to step 5 bubble.
-steps 5-7 are telling you how to find the files and utilities inside your mini-adb folder. you have them,so ignore steps 5-7.
-click the green procede to step 8 bubble.
-heres where steps are important, steps 8-10 are telling you how to get your unlock token, and send it to htc. its phone specific(so they prolly know your serial number, meid, etc) so no,you cant use your buddys unlock token and not have htc know that youve unlocked your bootloader. ;) copy this line either from below,or from step 8,and paste it into the prompt in your cmd window. you have to right click to paste in cmd,you cannot control/v :

fastboot oem get_identifier_token

-after yuo hit enter, you will get a bunch of letters that are your identifier token. not much i can say, other than follow the directions in steps 9 and 10 to copy and submit your identifier token to HTC. make sure you get the characters as shown in the pic, with no extra lines or letters. note that you can also hit the "enter" key on your PC to copy,as well as right clicking.
-click the green submit button. wait patiently for an email containing your unlock code. (dont worry,it should come pretty fast :p )
-save the unlock_code.bin that htc sends you directly to your mini-adb folder(if your PC automatically downloads somewhere else,no biggie. just move the unlock code to mini-adb folder)
-click the link in your email to get the rest of the unlock instructions
-step 12 is where them magic happens :D copy from below,or from htc dev:

fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin

-youll see the purdy screen pictured in step 13. use the vol rocker to chose "yes unlock bootloader" and select it with the power button. your phone will reboot, performaing a factory data reset in the process. your data is gone, sorry :( this boot may take a bit longer than they normally do,dont freak out this is normal

as you can see, once the adb files are put in one place to download, its not hard to use,and the commands are pretty simple. below is what you will see in your command window, the red are my inputs.

2)flash a recovery
if you want to run stock,do not permanently install your recovery. keeping the stock recovery on the phone will ensure that you recieve OTAs without a hitch, wich i know is important to alot of users. YES,the OTA will break root. its no big deal. one good thing about htcdev is that you will always be able to reroot after, simply by following steps 2 and 3 again to launch recovery, flash superser.

once youve either skipped past all the setup,or have re-set up and are ready to root, chose either of the following options to either permantly or termporarily install a recovery:

1)temporary recovery:
-move the recovery image file from the zip file you downloaded above and place it into the mini-adb folder. rename the image to "ace_recovery_ext_4"
-put the superuser zip file onto your phones sd card
-enable usb debugging once again,as above. open a cmd window,if its not still open from unlocking.
-if you had to re-open a cmd window, dont forget to change back to your mini-adb directory:

cd c:\mini-adb_vigor

-make sure youre connected by typing:

adb devices

-should return serial number
-check the md5 of your recovery image:

md5sums ace_recovery_ext_4.img

**make sure the resulting md5 matches 042e9fa838521592ec9224bfb27df52a
**

-boot to bootloader:

adb reboot bootloader

-check for connectivity:

fastboot devices

-should return serial number
-temporarily launch your recovery to phone memory:

fastboot boot <recoveryname>.img

-youll see a (really fast) green status bar on the top right as your PC sends the recovery to your phone. youll then see the HTC splash screen, then your recovery.

in your command window you will see(red are my inputs):

-to get to recovery, push the power button to select hboot. once in hboot wait for the green writing to flash and disapear, then select recovery.

*note that you can still launch recovery by using the command from scenario 1 above.
-youll then see the HTC splash screen, then your recovery.

there is not much to explain with this one. if booted to recovery from above, use the recovery menu on your phone to:

-wipe cache
-wipe dalvik cache
-install zip from sd card(chose your superuser file)
-reboot

an extremely common error is to not follow the above directions to flash the zip file in recovery, but to attempt to download and and install from the market.

THIS WILL NOT WORK

you will need to download the newest superSU from the thread as i describeb in the download section, and use the recovery menus to flash it.

*hope it helps, holler if you have questions :)

You said " " there is not much to explain with this one. if booted to recovery from above, use the recovery menu on your phone to:
-make a backup of your stock, unrooted rom. completely optional, but a very good idea,IMO.
-wipe cache
-wipe dalvik cache
-install zip from sd card(chose your superuser file)
-reboot

*congratulations, you're rooted :D "" , but , this does not appear to be the case on installing the superuser .. i went crazy trying to do this until several hours later i figured out that google had installed it for me when i selected it in the google store and there was no need to do it !!:smokingsomb:
Thanks

if you installed from the play store, you are not rooted. play store is only installing the app, wich is a user interface of sorts,to grant permissions to various things. the play store cannot install the matching binary wich is needed to actually give the root access.

you will need to flash superSU with recovery. i cannot recall the exact menu options(i mess with different recoveries on several different htc phones).

this link may help you. super user is installed just like installing a rom, except you do not need to wipe data. http://androidforums.com/desire-hd-all-things-root/631481-4ext-recovery-how.html

ignore the part about installing recovery,as you did that in step 2 of the guide. :)

B 4 I go there , remember that i can not install anything fron within my phone because all it does is bring up a readable file no matter what i try .

im not sure what you mean.

the basic steps for this will be:
1)boot to recovery on the phone
2)use ext 4 recovery menus to:
-wipe cache
-wipe dalvik cache
-instell the superuser zip(do not unzip or extract it)
-)reboot

rals ext 4 guide should help you do the things in step 2.

what exactly is preventing you from doing those things?

not a prollem :)

the important thing is that you are s off, wich makes things a lot easier for you.

if you intend to change radios, recoveries, etc. id pretty strongly recomend to go ahead and become superCID as well.

let us know how it goes :)
scotty85.... Sir! You are a genius and a great asset to this forum!!! The file you sent proved to be really useful. Followed the steps as you advised in this and the other thread and the whole process went as smoothly as one can dream of... and that too for a nooby like me, in just few minutes without a glitch.. The set is now SuperCID, rooted and on DHD Revolution ROM.. and working million times better than before. Also, the GPS issue also resolved with installation of new radio. THANK YOU SIR! I am really grateful for your wonderful help, support and patience with me. I mean it.. :D

P.S. Sorry for updating so late, was away for few days and just returned and sorted out the phone, which is now wonderful , ALL THANKS TO YOUR HELP.... :D

Okay so I rooted and flashed new ROM and has been working fine for about 3 weeks. Until last night. My battery died and now my phone wont load past the screen that shows the name of the ROM I flashed. I have a brick and can not get it to load so I can put it into USB debugging mode to try to fix it. Any ideas?

usb debugging is not really needed. if you can get to fastboot mode, you can still use fastboot commands.

wait until your sure the phone is fiully charged, then wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache and dalvik, and re-flash your boot image if youre still s on.

failing that, you can try installing a different rom,or restoring a backup(remember youll need to flash the boot iamge from your nandroid)

failing that,we might need to try and find an ruu you can relock and run. put the phone into fastboot, and enter in cmd:
fastboot getvar all and post the output here, xxx'ing out your meid and serial numbers.

Awww.. screw it /... it's unlocked and i suppose that's good enough ..

from the other thread i thot your phone was unlocked a long time ago?

it looks to me like you are following parts of different guides, parts of other things that you find, and you are not relaying all the info, making it difficult to impossible to help you.

if the "factory reset" option took you to ext 4,then you have ext 4 installed.

heres what you need to do:
-place the zipped superSU file onto your sd card.
-start the phone in hboot
-select recovery. ths should take you to ext 4
-using the other guide that i linked to help you know the exact menu options, use ext 4 to install superSU. again, your flashing it just like it was a rom, there is not a "flash superSU" menu option.

once you get a notification on the phone screen that the install is complete,go back to the main menu in ext 4 and chose the option to reboot.

once the phone boots, you should see supersu in your app drawer. now you can use titanium backup,or some other app to remove your bloatware.

if you continue to have issue, please provide as much info as you can, thuroughly detail ALL the things youve done, and provide copies of your entire CMD window, not just the bit with the error message. we can defiantely get you sorted if we can figure out at what point our comunication is failing and youre not following the directions quite correctly :)
