Root How to update unlocked & Rooted

HI. I am new to owning a smartphone and anything to do with updating. I bought the phone as rooted & unlocked. Currently I have a Samsung 4g SGH-T959v with firmware 2.2.1 (froyo).

My questions are: 1) how do I update my phone without messing up the unlocked & root? 2) Is there any disadvantages to updating? FYI: I have read some posts about flashing etc... I have no idea what that means. Real beginner.
