I have a Euro-spec unlocked Desire that I use with a GoPhone plan on AT&T's GSM network in the U.S., and it works just fine that way. I was not interested in a data plan, so have just been using WiFi for the past year.

I am now thinking of buying a block of data access for a trip I'm going on where WiFi access is going to be pretty thin. Right now, if I leave WiFi Off and turn "Mobile Network" On, I can get data access over the "Edge" network ("E" appears in the status bar). This works and I get charged at some few cents a Kb or whatever.

However, I think that I should have 3G service in my area, but I'm not sure how that all works or if it's different from one carrier to the next. Anyone have any idea if my model of phone can get a 3G connection from AT&T in the U.S.? It's possible that I'm being limited because I haven't purchased a data plan, but I'm sure nobody at the AT&T store can give me an answer since my phone was not sold by them.
