Help htc desire signal Detection issue

HI:

I've recently purchased an htc Desire smart phone running Android 2.3. The phone is great . My first smart phone and I love. The only issue that I have with it so far is that I can get or maintain a good and strong signal on the cellular network. I'm in Saudi Arabia using the STC mobile phone service. Dose anyone know if this problem is sue to the smart device itself, the Android OS, or a missing software or update?

Second, where did you purchase a Desire running Gingerbread? Or, is that a typo and you actually have 2.2?
