If it's an open network, then it should show in the list of available networks when you switch on your phones Wifi. If it's free, can you not just ask someone at your school for the details?

It's an Android issue. Had this problem with a WiFi network at work and couldn't find it with a Hero (OS1.5), a Magic (OS1.6) and I think that 2.1 devices have the same problem.

I was lucky in that I managed the WiFi network. I turned SSID broadcasting on, connected, turned SSID broadcasting off and the phone remembered and would then auto-connect whenever near.

Without being able to do that - don't have any suggestions.

Try using some Joint Compound.. ;-) Actually I think you need to just enable SSID on the rtr and then join... then you can turn it off.

I have the same issue (HTC Desire, 2.1). When I am connected and then disable SSID broadcasting, the connection is gone untill I enable broadcast again. :-(
