HTC Sync isn't compatible with the Nexus One, probably because it's Google's phone.

Shouldn't think so, never owned an iPhone.

As for a program to sync the phone, I don't know of one off hand. There was an aftermarket sync for Android but a) I forget what its called & b) it didn't support 2.1 when I found it.

I'm happy with the cloud for now.

Problem solved. Installed double twist. That's OK for media. Bur for my contacts I had to dig the. Desire out of its box sync withthat then transfer to SD card swap cards and blah blah.

Why aren't your contacts in Google Contacts? It's super convenient.

You can get to it from there. That's how most people end up with stuff in Google Contacts. Just put all your email addresses and phone numbers in there and let the phone sync them down. Whenever you make a change on either end, it is replicated on the opposite end. You never have to worry about losing your contacts again.
