When typing on even the better 8 the lack of a proximity alert gives Mr so many spelling mistakes it looks like I am drunk.

I didn't have this issue in the iPhone...

    Any duggestions?

get used to it. I know that sounds harsh. but I came from 1234567890 keyboard, to physical qwerty. However throughout those two phones I heavily used my iTouch.

The keyboards are different, giving a month or a bit longer(I know that's long) and it'll get better. After 6 months, I think I can almost touch type, just out of getting used to it.

If the keyboards were similar...Apple would've sued Samsung already...well sued them again/filed another lawsuit.

I find that Better Keyboard 8 (to which I assume you were jokingly but also obliquely referring) is a lot better than the standard keyboard, but I too find I make more mistakes on my SGS2 than I did on my iPhone. Having said that, I think that BK8's suggestions are more useful than they were on the iPhone so it probably balances out.

You could always try one of the alternative keyboards and see if they are any better.

Try gingerbread keyboard from market. Many people say it's very accurate. It's free.

I switched to swift key beta (free on the market). It really helps speed and accuracy. It constantly adapts to your typing style and uses words that you are familiar with (scans previous messages, twitter, facebook, etc). I highly recommend you checking it out.

FWIW, I type better in portrait with it as well which is abnormal with a touch screen.

I use Swype, as it is pre-installed on the SGS2. But I had used it for ages on my previous HTC Desire, so it was no change for me!

Thank you for your recommendations and commiserations, and am now enjoying the swift beta. Inserts the occasional word but at least I make sense... until I drink more beer!
