There are little things that I'll never understand. Most of them are human nature sort of things, but others have been legislated. Perhaps you have a few things that bug you too and might want to post them. Living in NYC, two of the things that constantly baffle me are graffiti and smoking. I've never understood grafitti or it's more virulent forms, scratchitti and acid burns. People here are always talking about how bad some neighborhoods are and how stuff is constantly getting defaced. I'm not talking about actual grafitti art. I'm talking about tags. They are everywhere in town, and I mean everywhere. on the one hand people complain that they neighborhoods are overrun with the stuff and look like crap and on the other hand there seems to be little to no public interest in doing anything about it. Even the laws covering the offenses are weak at best - the worst you can get is a token fine, which can often be lower than the cost to the owner of removing the tag from his property. I've never understood why a city that claims to be plaged by the scourge of this practice has never instituted more stringent penalties designed to discourage it. The other thing that baffles me is Cigarettes. I'm not a smoker, but I'm a firm believer in living and letting live. By that same token, I love the fact that you can't smoke inside bars, restaurants and public buildings in NYC. It is definitely nice to be able to go out and not come home smelling like an ash tray. That said, I don't like how the state seems to use ever increasing cigarette taxes as a cure all for budget gaps. Smokers should not be the punching bag for the state's inefficiencies. What baffles me is not smoking, but how folks seem to accept of the common practice of disposing of cigarettes, by simply throwing them on the ground wherever the person happens to be. I've always found it odd, that people will get bent out of shape if you throw a food wrapper on the floor, but find it perfectly acceptable to do the same with cigarettes. It's kind of comical that many folks here will walk for blocks holding an empty container until they find a trash can to dump it in, but will think nothing of just dumping a cigarette wherever they happen to be. even more baffling is, again, that while the city and the state have pursued smoking fines and taxes as their latest piggy bank, they have completely failed to enforce the very littering laws that already in the books. Anyhow, Things that make you go hmm... So what other odd things bug you guys?
