I need to learn how to use my downloaded ringtones as my notification ringer and alarm clock. I read something about setting a new directory for my sd card but I don't know how to do that.

The easiest way is to connect your phone to your computer using a USB cable, then pull down the notification bar and tap on USB Connected, then tap Mount. The memory card on your phone will (should) appear as a drive on your computer. Create the folders referenced in this post, remembering that "/sdcard" is the root of the drive from your computer's perspective, so you'll want to create a "media" folder in the root, and then create the subfolders. Copy your files into the appropriate folders.

When you're done, do whatever you need to do on your computer to make it safe to disconnect. Then disconnect the cable and you're all done.

One thing to note is that if you're using MP3 files, and the files have ID3 tags in them, the title in the tag is what will show up in the selection list in Android (at least it does for me), so renaming files may not change how they appear in the list.
