i have an I circled in the upper left corner of my phone,, there is nothing in the manual indicating what it is. any help is appreciated

When you pull your notification bar down, does it tell you what it is?
Can you better describe what it is? What device do you have and carrier?

i have at&t, it does not show what it is when i pull the notification bar down. its a capital I with a circle with a line through it

Go to Settings>Applications>Manage applications. Then tap Running. It’s one of those, maybe one has that icon.
