ics Hboot 1.29.0000 how to root

Hi I have just bought an xe to put me on while my contract ends and I can get a new fone. The thing is I am looking to root the device as theres sh*t loads of bloat ware that I want to freeze. I have searched all over but all I can find is s-off on earlier versions, I havent had an HTC device since the desire but you could root without s-off I dont know if this is still the case! So if anyone can help or knows of a guide let me know cheers
