Help I'd like to make the "long" in "long press" LONGER

I'm running Gingerbread on my rooted Thunderbolt. When playing music, a long press on the volume buttons skips to the next or previous track. This is a nice feature but I find myself skipping tracks while I'm pulling the phone out of my pocket, or changing volume. As I mostly listen to hours-long spoken word MP3s this is extremely inconvenient. Ideally I'd like to make a long press = 5 seconds (currently it's more like one second). Or failing that, turn this feature off altogether. Any help? I've had a look at /system/usr/keylayout/*.kl but can't find a setting for defining what a long press is.

I assume it goes to lock screen mode when in your pocket, do you have an option to not have the music controls show up on the lock screen?

Yes it goes to lock screen, but it doesn't show the music controls when it does. The screen is completely black, yet the volume buttons skip tracks. Both in Google Music and in Pandora. Like I said, it's a great feature but it's too touchy.
