Is there any way to enable illumination when receiving a text? I've had the phone for a week, and I've looked high and low...to no avail.

    I would agree with this...
My old Palm Centro would light up for 3 seconds when I received a text so I could briefly read the text without turning it completely on. So that's what I'm used to.

Now I hear the text, but I'm into the habit of staring at a black screen... meh.

I hope 2.2 will address this.

I use an app called SMS Popup which has messages show up in a pop-up and turn on the screen. You can change the notification style, send a quick reply, and set individual contact notifications. It's not the full-featured app that Handcent is, but I actually used Handcent and found I prefer using the regular Messaging App together with SMS Popup.
