Lately I've gotten a few questions about doing work on images....and to be honest I suck at it....lol....
-So this thread may die, but I thought it would be a good idea to open up a place for people to talk about how they edit images and anything that may help them/others.

    I use gimp mainly.

Maybe those of us trying to do that type of work could post up our questions and see if we can get somewhere with our projects....

    or helpful links, or anything....

I modded the audio manager app so that the widget would have a transparent background as can be seen in my screenshot below.

I used gimp and betterzip (paid app for mac that is like 7zip) resigned the app and that was it. really easy to do. If anyone would like to know how to do this lmk.

Faber, is this what you were looking for in this thread??

yeah, im guessing anything that helps....
how did you get the transparency to work?

I dunno.. the background was listed as background.png and I just filled it with black at 65% transparency in gimp

something i cant figure out in gimp for the life of me and im sure its very simple but lets use a wallpaper im editing for example ,,,,if i add a word or anything to the wallpaper once i save my image and lets say i want to come back later and erase what i added earlier i cant figure it out at all ,,,there has to be some sort of simple highlight and delete?also can someone explain layers to me....

When you save the file you're actually exporting it. When compressing the png it will either merge visible layers or flatten the image. They are both almost the same. flattening converts all your existing layers down to one background layer. Merge visible will only merge layers that aren't hidden down to one layer but it's not considered a bg layer. There really isn't a good way to do the whole highlight it and remove it with the file being a .png. If you want to go back and edit the image with the layers still in tact save it as either a .xcf file or a .psd file. These will conserve your layers. Now. layers are very useful. You start out with a BG layer and this can either be filled with a solid color, gradient, or transparent. I usually choose transparent and start there. I get my background set up then anything I want to add to the image I put it on additional layers to keep it all organized. You can then set up multiple layers with different settings and turn them on or off to see what your image would look like without it. You can also set a layer to act differently meaning you can make the images look different on the page by setting the layer to have an 'overlay' effect.

Dude that's awesome. I didn't know any of that. Gives me something new to learn.

No problem man. I usually create what I want and save it in both forms (png and xcf) that way if I don't like it later on I can easily make adjustments to the .xcf and save as png.

My photoshop skills are pretty rusty but I could try giving this a go. Its something I actually know how to do as opposed to all the actual theme editing

hey guys heres a question for you. I'm sure its possible but I must be missing something here...
using GIMP Im trying to take the color from one image and change it to make it the same color from another image.
    for example:
say I want to take this image
    [IMG]
and change the green to the blue from this image
    [IMG]
is this possible with gimp? if so can you guys give me a little walk through? or point me in the right direction? thanks

there should be a tool on the top right of the tool bar it says color picker, that should be what actually locates the color, though im not at my pc with it up and running, im running off a pure guess that im 75% sure about. trust me, it took me a long, long, long time to actually come up with a shining light and glowing light strings for the background of my theme, but boy does it look good when you get finished with it

Thats not too difficult given that the color you're changing from doesn't vary over the object.
You can do it a few different ways. You can swap colors meaning everything in your image thats a certain blue gets changed from that blue to another specified color. Go to colors->map->color exchange. It's pretty self explanatory from there but if you need me to go more in depth lmk.

another method is to utilize the dropper tool or 'pipet' tool. Its the one that looks like an eye dropper on the second row of tools. Click that tool then select the color that you want to use to replace the green with blue in your case. This then will become your foreground color. Then grab the fuzzy selection tool (looks like a wand). Select the region of color that you are replacing. Green in your case. it will select the region that has a similar color. You can add additional regions by pressing shift while you select. You can subtract a selection by holding either control or alt and selecting. After you have selected the area you want to change the color of go and get the fill tool. You can then fill in the regions with that color. I prefer to use the gradient tool and pick two colors that are close to each other the BG color being slightly darker or lighter. Then I fill with a radial gradient to give a really nice effect to the icon or button.

LMK if you need more info.

thanks for all of that info. im still getting some trouble with it though. ill explain what ive got going on
ok 1) the color exchange option isnt available for me when I go into color>map
    its greyed out
    2) when i try the second way and I go to fill the green selected area with the blue FG color fill it turns out some like extremely light green (like an offwhite with a hint of green)
    3) when I try to do the gradient fill i get this error "Blend does not operate on indexed layers"

obviously im doing something just a tad wrong here lol
thanks again for all of your explanation

yeah I really should have mentioned to make sure you were in RGB mode (whoops! lol). When indexed you really can't do much to it.

ah ok, that makes sense. do you guys know the name of the apk that does the power control? or maybe where those images are located? swapping everything in drawable-hdpi didnt change it lol.

id have thought that too but the icon in it shows a little news paper with a headline of "google news" so i dont think its that one. im still digging though lol
BTW I think a general "image editing theme help" thread like this was a great idea for people like me who have done some minor theme stuff but want to get deeper into it.

do you guys know if its possible to make a .png image into a .9.png image?
    like this image
    [IMG]
is .png so if i wanted to make it into my lock slider I have to use a .9.png instead
faber, I think you did a lot of work with these before when you were making custom lock sliders right?
