So I had a 5 yr old blackberry, was able to use the blackberry software to output my phone book (name, addy,ph#, all kinds of data) to a comma delimited txt file, which i then imported into an .xls excel spreadsheet

is there a way to use either of those files to populate my phone book on my new phone (droid x, android 2.2) instead of typing up hundreds of new entries?

If you have the csv file still, login to your gmail on your computer. Under Contacts, you can import that file. When you get your new phone and sign into your gmail, in a few minutes you will have all those contacts.
